Each student in the Essex Family of Schools received pledge sheets and went to work and in early May the great day arrived. Led by a pipe band, 700 students, accompanied by 4 police cars and 2 fire engines, created history as they marched through Essex. There was a slight drizzle but it didn't matter and the cheering students ended their triumphant march at Essex High, where the Kinsmen Club of Essex were waiting to feed them. The media were on hand to report on the march and the results of their efforts quickly spread through the community- the four schools had raised close to $32,000!!! Monies were sent immediately to Schools For Salone and they began to build the school in the spring. The alumni then rose to the challenge and finished the fundraising to bring the total to over $40,000 and by June the Essex Family had provided their school in Maforeka with $35,000 in US funds.
